Stress is a natural part of daily life. Our body’s stress response is preprogrammed biologically. Everyone responds in much the same way, regardless of stress. However, with high levels of stress or when stressful situations go unresolved, the body is kept in a constant state of activation, which increases the rate of wear and tear to biological systems. Stressors also diminish relationship well-being and are associated with poorer psychological functioning. Ultimately, fatigue or physical damage can result. The innate ability of the body to repair and defend itself can become seriously compromised. Therefore, learning ways to manage and mitigate stress can significantly enhance your quality of life, as well as the quality of life of those around you, and improve your physical and emotional health.
Potomac Psychiatry’s Stress Management Program is a short-term, goal-oriented, experiential program that will teach you mind, body and relationship skills for combating stress and learning how to manage stress more effectively. The stress management program is built on cognitive behavioral (CBT) and experiential therapy models that realize there is an intrinsic, unbreakable connection between thought patterns, emotions, behaviors and environment that can be effectively modified to reduce your stress levels and produce a more satisfying life.
The Stress Management Program is therapy-based program where a therapist will do a thorough assessment of your individual sources and causes of stress in your life, and customize your therapy sessions to teach you various stress management skills in the following areas:
Cognitive strategies that teach you how to recognize unproductive ways of thinking, and teach you alternative thoughts and behaviors that foster realistic thoughts, positive emotions and healthy interactions.
Mind-body strategies explored to find the ones that work best for you. Mind-body strategies can evoke a “relaxation response” that directly counters the stress response. These strategies in essence “Harness the power of your mind”
Physical behavior strategies such as exercise, sleep, and nutrition will be assessed and explored (additional consultations with a personal trainer and dietician can be added to your personalized program when requested)
Relationship strategies that foster positive and stress-reducing relationships will be explored. Positive and supportive family relationships can insulate individuals from stress, improve your resilience, and decrease the risk of poor emotional and physical health over time.
Additional factors that influence your ability to manage stress will be explored based on your unique history, personality and needs.
