  • Family Relationship Counseling & Therapy

Families can be torn apart by illness, divorce or other problems that create conflict and stress. Family therapy can help families identify and resolve problems. At Potomac Psychiatry our own families have lived through major transitions as children have grown older, parents and grandparents have passed away, and children exit the home for college and graduate school.

We have experienced these transitions first-hand, and apply our personal experiences in parenting, with our years of professional experience and training, to assist you and your loved ones in achieving a more satisfying and joyful family life.

Couples experience an extensive array of challenges throughout their life cycle together, and each new era in life brings its rewards and its challenges. Couples therapy focuses on where and when the relationship went “off track;” how misunderstandings develop from problems communicating with one another to cause feelings of mistrust, disappointment, and confusion; and identifies the root causes of a particular couple’s marital strain and strife. Once identified, these causes can be clearly and openly addressed in the spirit of resolving them and moving on to a healthier relationship.

Your family can be your greatest source of support, comfort and love. But it can also be your greatest source of pain and grief. A health crisis, mental illness, work problems or teenage rebellion may threaten to tear your family apart.

Family therapy can help your family weather such storms, patch strained relationships, teach new coping skills and improve how your family works together. Whether it’s you, your partner, a child or even a sibling or parent who’s in crisis, family therapy can help all of you communicate better and learn to get along.

Couples and family therapy and family systems therapy is a branch of psychotherapy that works with families and couples in intimate relationships to nurture change and development. It tends to view change in terms of the systems of interaction between family members. It emphasizes family relationships as an important factor in psychological health.

Family therapy has been used effectively in the full range of human dilemmas; and there is no category of relationship or psychological problem that has not been positively addressed with this approach.
