Premarital Counseling & Therapy

Your marital relationship can become a tremendous source of love, affection, support and motivation. Research shows that people in long-term happy relationships are physically and emotionally healthier over the life span. How you start and cultivate your marriage can have a tremendous impact over the course of the relationship.

Are you currently engaged or contemplating marriage? Are you newly married and wanting to ensure that you continue the happy relationship? Or are you engaged or newly married and the "honeymoon phase” of your relationship is diminishing, or it has already ended?

Premarital counseling is a way that you and your partner can learn to enhance positive relationship skills to help each of you achieve satisfaction within your marriage over the long term. Research shows that there are consistent characteristics that increase dissatisfaction and risk for divorce over time, and likewise that there are key characteristics and dynamics that foster marital happiness.

Premarital counseling at Potomac Psychiatry will meet you and your partner where each of you are in the relationship, develop a customized time-sensitive plan that will help you and your partner know each other better; be able to identify and communicate your needs in the relationship, and be able to respond optimally to your partner’s needs; and help foster a marital friendship where your goals and dreams for life are shared. Your premarital counseling will be with Dr. Liz Davenport Pollock, a warm and accepting therapist and is built on solid research evidence.

The Premarital Counseling Program consists of one 90 minute assessment, six 90 minute sessions that are goal oriented to optimize your relationship, and 2 post-wedding booster sessions for tweaking the relationship post wedding. (Note: if you are newly married, this package will work for you, too. You can decide on your post-wedding boosters anytime you wish.)

Liz Davenport Pollock is a Marriage, Family, and Individual Therapist specializing in therapy with children, adolescents, families and couples. She provides individual, family, couples, and group therapy on issues surrounding emotion management, interpersonal relationships, communication, parenting skills, behavior problems, self-esteem, ADHD, and general family functioning.
